FDA STUDY CONFIRMS CANCER RISK WITH POWER MORCELLATION

|

The FDA recently issued a safety communication, in which it discouraged the use of laparoscopic power morcellation for the removal of the uterus in a hysterectomy or the removal of uterine fibroids.  Our St. Louis power morcellation attorneys have learned that the FDA has discouraged the use of the power morcellation, because based on a comprehensive study of the available data, this procedure poses a risk of spreading unsuspected cancerous tissue, in particular uterine sarcomas, beyond the uterus.

Laparoscopic power morcellation is a procedure in which fibroids are broken up into smaller pieces so it can be removed from a small incision in the abdomen.  Unfortunately, one in 350 women who are undergoing a hysterectomy or similar procedure for the removal of fibroids have an unsuspected type of uterine cancer called uterine sarcoma.  If laparoscopic power morcellation is performed on these women, there is a risk that the power morcellation will spread the cancerous tissue within the abdomen and pelvis, significantly worsening the patient’s likelihood of long-term survival.

The power morcellation attorneys at NGK Law have reviewed this study and are concerned about the ramifications for any women that have undergone laparoscopic power morcellation procedures.  Our power morcellation attorneys are currently investigating power morcellation lawsuits and examining these cases to determine the best cause of action against the makers of power morcellation machines, including Johnson & Johnson.  We expect that power morcellation lawsuits filed by NGK Law will focus on the fact that the manufacturers of the power morcellation machine did not warn about this risk of spreading this dangerous, and potentially deadly uterine cancer.

The power morcellation attorneys at NGK Law are particularly concerned, in that the FDA, the United States Regulatory Agency for Food and Drugs, has discouraged the use of laparoscopic power morcellation during hysterectomy or myomectomy for the treatment of women with uterine fibroids.   As a result, we are informing all women that have developed uterine cancer, in particular uterine sarcomas, after undergoing a power morcellation procedure, to contact NGK Law and its power morcellation attorneys today at (314) 350-1900 to discuss the options available.  Our attorneys will inform any clients whether or not they believe that there are grounds for a power morcellation lawsuit.  We look forward to speaking with you further.

  • What should I bring to my initial consultation with a personal injury attorney?

Bring any relevant documents, such as medical records, police reports, insurance information, photos of the accident scene, and correspondence with insurance companies. This information will help your attorney at NGK Law Firm evaluate your case more effectively.

  • Can I still file a claim if I was partially at fault for the accident?
